Window taxes

The UK has a window tax.

A long, long time ago, homes had a property tax based on the number of windows. Basically, the bigger house, the more windows, the more tax paid. In an effort to reduce tax, homeowners bricked-up windows like this house at the end of our road.

If you live or visit the UK, take a look around and marvel at all of the windows that have been bricked-over! They are everywhere!

  1. I would have thought brick was more expensive….Do you know what the inside looks like?

    • We have not lived in a property with bricked-over windows nor do I recall ever being inside of one that does. I assume they would be plastered over with no visible sign of a window.

  2. so you think they put drywall up and not let the brick show through….Might give them a nice draft:)
